Improve the Nutritional Wellbeing of your Children

In addition to following your nutrition and exercise program, here is a list of ideas for improving the nutrition status of your children.

  1. Encourage your children to consume a minimum of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
  2. Offer water, caffeine free diet sodas, or sugar free fruit drinks, in place of regular soda and fruit juices.
  3. Offer fruit in place of fruit juice as fruit has more fiber and is more satisfying.
  4. Serve dinner in the kitchen. Allow seconds of vegetables and salad before more of the meat and starch.
  5. If you feel your child has had a reasonable sized meal yet they tell you they are still hungry, ask them to wait 20 minutes before eating anything else. It takes that long for the brain to know that the stomach is full. More than likely, your child will have moved on to a non-eating activity by the time the 20 minutes are up.

  1. Go on a family walk for 30 minutes.
  2. Insist on screen breaks---ask your children to spend 10 minutes walking or stretching for every hour of TV or computer time.
  3. Limit TV and computer time to one to two hours per day.
  4. Involve your children in shopping and meal preparation. These are excellent opportunities to teach your children about good nutrition.
  5. Try some of these healthy snack ideas:
    • Walden Farms Veggie Dips with veggie sticks
    • Walden Farms Fruit Dips with fruit wedges
    • Walden Farms PB&J made with Walden Farms Whipped Peanut Spread and Jams & Jellies
    • Walden Farms Syrups make delicious smoothies
  6. Most importantly, enjoy your children and feel good about teaching good nutrition and exercise habits. They are likely to last a lifetime..
